Lowrider Band is Legit
Bring the Lowrider Band to ATL! This band had 4 original members from the incredible, legendary War, including Lee Oskar. Their mark on the music industry is phenomenal. Follow them and lets bring them to one of our great venues – Aisle 5, Venkman’s, City Winery, even Terminal West. Continue Reading

#1 Soul Train Dancer – Cheryl Song
Anyone who grew up with funk and soul in the 70s watched Soul Train. And all of those funkateers and wannabees (like me) watched the line dancing. Cheryl Song reigned as the queen of the line dance for 14 years! Nice interview can be found here: Interview with Cheryl Song Continue Reading
Dank – Definitely High Quality
Had the pleasure of seeing Dank perform at Smith’s Olde Bar last night and the band took me and the rest of the crowd on an aural orbit that kept the beat pumping and the heartbeats thumping. Overall set was great interspersed with Dank tunes and then accompanied by Zale on lead vocals (covered in a separate post). Dank has some very catchy vibes on their own but coupled with Zale there was definitely an explosive energy. In addition, solos by Matt and Josh were both program highlights for me. Not sure at this point exactly how to classify Dank’s musicContinue Reading
Hedonistas – Maiden Voyage
Finally made it to see my buddy, Jake Keeble and his band Hedonistas open up at Smith’s Olde Bar this past Saturday. Getting there early was worth it to catch this short but energetic set. Jake is the frontman singer, doubling on guitar and keys, and has a great voice to boot. Each member took a turn on solos and I especially enjoyed the high pulse axe work by Pete and Max and the interplay with Jake. My favorite tune was a funky boogie with Jake on keys, which I believe was either Spanish Lava Lamp or Lucky Buddha (Jake,Continue Reading

Porch 40
What’s this? A new band at an olde bar? On a somewhat slow night in ATL, I hit Smith’s Olde Bar to see Porch 40 who I’d never heard of. Checked out on YouTube below and was intrigued by their funky rock sound highlighted by a pairing of sax and violin. Watch and listen to Nice Words Well, for the not quite packed crowd, a terrific crazy show ensued. It reminded me of the first time I saw The Revivalists in that it was a mix of fun vocals, great interaction with the crowd, high energy and excellent musicians playing offContinue Reading

What is Hip? What it Is!
Tower of Power was one of the greatest, earliest continuous musical influences in my life. Most of the bands I love today know TOP in a big way – Lettuce, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Snarky Puppy all know these cats and have been influenced by them. Lenny Pickett is probably my favorite sax man of all time (and a great dancer!). Check it out!Continue Reading
