It’s time to close the book on 2023 with my annual Best Albums coverage of a whopping 27 recordings. The list includes many from my Track-by-Track reviews and several on top of that from which the FunkCity.net album of the year will be selected. The selections are not in any special order so dig in anywhere you’d like. Links to  each album on YouTube are included in the writeup and links to my full album reviews are included where available (and will be updated as time permits). These albums were my most listened to and include selections in jazz, funk,Continue Reading

When I think of Denver funk, The Motet is the first band I think of.  They’ve been putting out great albums for more than 20 years, with All Day, being their 10th and I’ve been with them most of that time. This album takes them back to their funk roots of hard hitting, retro-echoing, mood-enhancing instrumental music. In a way, the band has come full circle, from its afro-cuban stylings through it’s two eras with lead vocals and back. All throughout, The Motet‘s live sets always featured two or three tunes featuring instrumentals. One new twist for this release isContinue Reading

Like everyone, 2021 started in a dubious lockdown of live music for me.  I was hoping and looking for some sore of “all clear” signal to come out of hibernation and the Covid protocols of vaccination or negative test along with mask mandates and pod concerts developed. Starting April 2, the day I got my second shot, I ventured out again and the first show I attended was SunSquabi at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, and I ended the year seeing them three times. That show was the first of 44 days (that I can count) that I attended liveContinue Reading

It’s just two short weeks to Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, Florida and the daily schedule is out. Hulaween is one of North America’s premiere multi-faceted boutique festival experiences, and is celebrating its seventh year with a mix of 100+ live and electronic artists on five stages to soundtrack a fully immersive creative journey.  Of course, I’ll be viewing and videoing as many sets as I physically can focused on the funk and jazz end of the spectrum. The lineup is stacked and here’s the day-by-day rundown of my targets for video. Thursday arrival late and I’ll be off the beatenContinue Reading

Mopapod? Dopatet?  The double bill of Dopapod + The Motet at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on 11/18 promised to be a funk extravaganza as it was the last of the pairing of these two bands on the tour.  The pumped up crowd was stoked from Dopapod’s opening (Dopapod opening tune on YouTube) right to the superjam at the end (The Motet + Dopapod, This is How We Do It on YouTube). Dopapod  recently released their fifth studio album, Megagem and has been on tour with The Motet for a few weeks.  After a New Year’s Eve show in Boston, the groupContinue Reading
