2024 was a great one for recorded funk, jazz, soul and world music. This article covers the wide range of albums I enjoyed during the year from some perennial favorites like The New Mastersounds, Ghost-Note, Kamasi Washington, Lotus and The Greyboy Allstars to new and new-to-me artists like Diggin’ Dirt, Tatiana Eva-Marie and Kinga Glyk. To say I’m excited to be going to Newport Jazz Festival 2024 is a huge understatement. I’ve only been once, about 30 years ago, and this is the first time I’ll be at all three days. And OMFG, what a packed three day schedule it is. It’d be virtually impossible to see every act, or even every one that I’m interested in due to the short sets with overlapping times.
