Papadosio began the last week of their spring tour last night at The SignalThe SignalThe Signal in Chattanooga Tennessee. Opening for Papadosio, and joining them for this final week, was Buffalo New York’s jam band Aqueous. This was a winning combination in my book, so I decided to make the drive from Atlanta to see what these two bands had in store.
Aqueous opened the night with King for a Day which provided an excellent opening jam as people started coming in. King for a Day ended interestingly as guitarist Mike Gantzer had some technical difficulties with his amp and gave guitarist/keyboardist Dave Loss, drummer Rob Howk, and bassist Evan McPhaden a chance to show off some trio work. Once Gantzer got his amp in working order and came back into the jam the band transitioned into They’re Callin For Ya. As the crowd continued to grow, They’re Callin For Ya kept the energy going with great guitar work from Gantzer. Next up was Numbers and Facts which got into dance friendly funk sections led by McPhaden’s bass. The hour long opening set came to a close with just the 4th song of the set 20/20.

Papadosio took the stage at right at 9:30pm and opened the show with a huge Smile and Nod XL that went deep into the trippy psychedelic space. Monochrome and We Can Always Come Back kept the deep dark feeling going until the band transitioned into the highlight of the night How Not to Float. Anchored by the rhythm section of Mike Healy on drums and Rob McConnell on bass, How Not to Float created dance friendly beats as well as soaring melodies and solos from the other three members Anthony Thogmartin, Billy Brouse, and Sam Brouse.
Papadosio continued the night with the light and fluffy sounds of Stick Figure before plunging back into the dark psychedelic space of Drift. Drift transitioned nicely into the funky beat of Euclidean Lights which showed off the skills of Mike Healy once again. Cloud Found provided the Chattanooga crowd with another breath of air on the lighter side of things and set up for the second highlight of the evening and also the set closer The Eyes Have Eyes. Eyes ended and as the band walked off stage the”One More Song” chants began. Papadosio thanked the crowd for getting rowdy with them on a Wednesday night and encored with Glimpse of Light from their Extras in a Movie album.
